Community competition legislation: the preliminary draft text on merger control in WAEMU validated by representatives of the Union’s Member States

From 27 to 29 July 2020, the Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), through its Department of Regional Market and Cooperation, hosted a webinar.

The aim of the meeting was to strengthen the legal framework for competition in the WAEMU area by reviewing, with a view to its validation, the preliminary draft text on mergers within WAEMU.

Participants included experts from the Member States’ national competition bodies and a representative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). They were joined by the consultant responsible for drafting the preliminary draft regulation and by several officials of the WAEMU Commission responsible for competition, the private sector, the digital economy and legal affairs.

At the close of the proceedings, the preliminary draft text on merger control within WAEMU was validated by representatives of the Union’s Member States.
