Harmonising the Community competition framework: the ECOWAS and WAEMU Commissions consult in Lomé

The meeting, which opened on 29 March 2021, will review the comments of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the draft Cooperation Agreement between ECOWAS and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) on the application of competition rules. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss avenues for cooperation between the two institutions under a joint capacity-building plan.

The meeting is co-chaired by Tèi KONZI, ECOWAS Commissioner for Trade, Customs and Free Movement, and his WAEMU counterpart in charge of the Department of Regional Market and Cooperation, Joãozinho MENDES, with the participation of officials from both institutions.

The recommendations made at the meeting are intended to mark a concrete step forward in defining the cooperation mechanisms needed to remove the risk of conflicting decisions in competition matters.

The meeting closes on Wednesday 31 March 2021.
